Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes. 100%. A lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond. They are both pure carbon crystalized in the same cubic structure. The only difference is origin: one formed over billions of years beneath the earth's surface, and the other was grown in a controlled environment in a matter of weeks.

Gemological institutes like the GIA and IGI certify lab-grown diamonds the same way they certify mined ones, grading them on cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Every lab-grown diamond in our collection comes with an IGI certified report.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?

There are two main methods: HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature), which replicates the conditions deep within the earth, and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition), which builds the diamond layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas. Both processes produce diamonds that are indistinguishable from mined stones, even to trained gemologists without specialized equipment.

The Biggest Differences

1. Price

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50 to 80% less than mined diamonds of the same size and quality. That means your budget for a 1-carat diamond goes a lot further. You can choose a larger stone, a higher clarity grade, or put savings toward a matching wedding band.

2. Sustainability

Mining for diamonds is resource-intensive. It can disturb ecosystems, use significant water, and in some regions raises ethical concerns. Lab-grown diamonds sidestep those issues entirely. At A Gilded Leaf, all of our lab-grown diamonds are ethically sourced and hand-selected for quality and brilliance.

3. Resale Value

Mined diamonds historically retain more resale value than lab-grown diamonds, which have seen declining resale prices as supply has grown. If investment value matters to you, this is worth considering. That said, most people buying engagement rings are not planning to sell them.

4. Appearance

You cannot tell them apart with the naked eye. Even a trained jeweler cannot distinguish them without lab equipment. Lab-grown diamonds display the same fire, brilliance, and sparkle as their mined counterparts.

What About Moissanite?

Moissanite is a different gemstone entirely, made of silicon carbide rather than carbon, but it is often compared to diamonds because of its similar sparkle and much lower price point. It actually has more fire (rainbow light dispersion) than a diamond, which some people love and others find too flashy.

So Which Should You Choose?

Choose a lab-grown diamond if you want a certified diamond with the prestige of the word "diamond," but want to maximize your budget and minimize environmental impact.

Choose a natural diamond if provenance, tradition, or investment value matters to you and budget allows.

Choose moissanite if you want the most sparkle per dollar and you love the idea of a unique, lab-created gemstone with its own story.

At A Gilded Leaf, we offer all three so you can make the choice that is right for you, not the one that is right for a jeweler's margin.
